Interview with Thomas (voice) made on 28/11/03

Leo: Hi Thomas. How going this second european tour? Having fun?

Thomas: We love Europe. The people, the places. Everythings great here European Kids are honest, polite and are very interested into politics issue. More than the american ones. Only problem is that anytime we tour Europe, I always get sick and lose my voice This is due to all the smokes that circulates in the clubs and in the venues where we play. One good thing about the U.S. is that in the clubs where we play smoking is not allowed. I think Europeans should worry more about the whole smoking issue.

Leo: Speaking about the new album, where did you get the title from?

Thomas: It's a phrase, its an idea that interests us. We need to get away from those cultural clichès, from everything America is and has always been, that is, being so blind to history. The history of the working class. The history of all those voice that have been silcenced. And then we would like punk rock to be more international. We're pratically on tour all the time. We've already been to Australia, to Europe and to Japan. And this experiences have really educated us.

Leo: It seems your sound has gone thru an evolution, "Exit english" seems more mature and complex than "Change is a sound". Do you agree? How did you face the whole recording phase of the album?

Thomas: We've written all the songs during our former european tour, so all the tracks have been created in that period. We've just worked on them for a longer time. We didn't want to make something too similar to "Change is a sound".

Leo: In these days we're living such a delicate international situation (politics isssues, war, terrorism) and your lyrics, that often speak about revolting again those who rule the world, cover a very strong meaning. How do kidz react when you sing about all these issues?

Thomas: People need to have a space where all their fears and frustrations can be released and turned into something positive. We have a particular situation in the U.S. right now. So many people do not agree with George Bush and with what he's doing. And of course, we notice this at our shows

Leo: Going on your website, I noticed that all the old songs could have been downloaded from there. Now this is not possible anymore. Why that?

Thomas: It's just an accident. We're always on tour, and we haven't anyone that runs the website for us. So in this moment that section is currently down, but we'll put it back working soon and you will be able to download the new songs too. We don't mind if people download our music on the internet.

Leo: Richmond's scene seems particularly brilliant right now. I see lots of good bands coming from there. Do you see a particular reason for that? Do you think Avail have been given an important contribution about this?

Thomas: Definitely. Even though they really aren't from Richmond. They moved there in the 90s from D.C. We're great friend with them, and all I can say is that they brought lot of vitality when they came to Richmond. Anyway, Richmond scene has always been very active. Many bands (White Cross for example ) came from there.

Leo: What do you mean when you say: we all are human pollution?

Thomas: 2 different things:
One is that the word punk, in old english mean trash. And that's the way our so called political leaders see us. As if we were powerless workers, ready to be exploited to elevate them. So we in this case we used the word sarcastically.
And then we also mean , on a more ecological level, that in our lives it's not important what we collect, what we consume, cause our species (the human one) is not the more important in the world.

Leo: I know you all are vegetarian. What led you to this choice? And what do you think about these big corporations based on animals exploitation such as McDonalds?

Thomas: I hate them. Its so important to get to know where your food comes from and why, and not to support animal cruelty. We're just killing the earth everyday more and more. Look for example the monocropy thing. Going back to the meat thing, there are many negative aspects in eating it. For example, many cases of womens getting cancer was because they ate too much proteines, ate too much of the same kind, all derivated from animals. It'a terrible, it's all social engineering. This is only one of the many reasons that led us to not to eat animals.

Leo: Do you feel like say anything to the readers of saveyourscene.com?

In the meanwhile Carl (guitar) enters the room

Thomas: Carl, should we say anything to these guys?

Carl: Hmm...Have fun being punk!

Thomas: Yeah, it's important keeping all this on a fun level. Even when you go to a politics demonstration, dont let your ego take the best of it, cause you wont have anyone with you then..

Leo: Leo: Thanks a lot guys.

Thomas: Thanks to you.
