OLD SCHOOL HC REVENGE NIGHT: The Difference + The Miracle + Last Cares
05/03/2005 - CPA Fi Sud, Firenze

It’s a great thing when you discover that your city’s hc scene is not as dead as you thought it was. That’s the conclusion I’ve come up to after this show. And yep, I truly was pleasantly surprised with the participation and the turnout of the show.
I thought old school was not a particularly appreciated genre here in Florence Not anymore, at least. Plus Cult of Luna were playing Bologna this same night , so I thought all the people interested in hc here in my city would have been “infected” by their intellectuals friend and opted for that show. But again, I was wrong and very happy about it.

First band of the night were Last Cares from Bologna. Fast stuff very American Nightmare influenced. They had the hard task to warm up (in every sense, cause it was freezing cold in the venue…) the place, and despite the technical problems they’ve had (both guitars got fucked up! Real bad luck that was) they’ve managed to accomplish their mission. They surely need to practice a little more and improuve few things, but since they’ve only recently gotten together, I say they have the time to do it.

Second band on the bill were Brianza’s The Miracle. And lemme tell you, these guys have definitely owned the place and thrilled the audience. They start off their set with a classic such as Gorilla Biscuits “Start today” and get the crowd moving immediately. Powerful old school reminding of sacred cows of the genre like Chain of Strength and Floorpunch with lots of youth crew singalong parts and sporadic breakdowns. They played most of their new material and I must say it sounds really consistent. I suggest everyone to check out their new EP recently came out for Commitment Records cause it’s really worth the listen. They end their perfomance with a Judge cover and everybody struggles to catch the mic again and sing along. Great set, my personal pick for the night.

Last band scheduled to play were Rome’s The Difference. This band has had some serious bad luck in the recent past. They’ve had some major line up problems since 3 members out of 5 have left the band (2 of them joined To Kill) . Now, with an almost brand new line up they’re back (the only original members left are the singer and one guitar) on the track. I had really enjoied their debut EP “Times We Share” of last June so it was great news to me knowing they didn’t get lost on the way. That would have sucked cause the 4 songs contained on this EP, reminiscent of Carry on, Champion and 7 Seconds are really top notch and definitely deserve a follow up. I was hoping they would have played some songs of the old band (Receipt. Great powerful old school) these 2 remaining members played in but that didn’t happen. They preferred playing some new material instead which sounds a little more melodic but still very competitive. Fast, energetic set that everyone appreciated.
After a SOIA’s cover (Step down!) many kids start asking for Chain of Strenght’s “TRUE TILL DEATH” and the execution of this classic stood out to be the topic moment of the night, with all the young kids (and the few older ones even) gathered under the stage to do fingerpointing and to scream “Has the Edge gone Dull?” Coolness!
All in all, we’ve had some serious fun. Great bands and a show that went far beyond my expectations. It has been awesome seeing not only kids from Florence dancing and singing along to the songs, but also kids from out of Tuscany that drove more than 2 hours to be there and support the bands and the scene.
Never underestimate the power of HC!
